The Story of Jess & Drew
I was lucky enough to be the photographer at Jess and Drew’s recent wedding. They are such an amazing couple, and I thought I would share their story with you all.
Jess and Drew met when they were just 15 years old. They were friends for several years before they started dating. Their first ‘official’ date was washing Drew’s car at the local carwash. This was quickly followed by a more traditional date at the movie theatre.
Jess and Drew were only born 9 days apart, with Drew being born 2 months prematurely. A week after Drew was born he was transferred to a different hospital and two days after that, Jess was born at the very same hospital that Drew had been transferred to! The doctors told Drew’s parents that as he was born prematurely he would always be short for his age. Drew had other ideas and now stands at an impressive 6 foot 6 inches tall.
Since finishing university, Jess has been working as a primary school teacher. In fact, one of her proudest teaching moments was when two of her students made her a card to celebrate her wedding. The 8 year old students were able to spell ‘spectacular’ on the card, which is very impressive for eight year olds!
Drew on the other hand was a boilermaker but is now a mechanical technician. In fact, Drew was interviewed for his current job the morning before his wedding day. When the company contacted Drew to arrange the interview, Drew said that we had better make it in the morning as I am getting married tomorrow! Luckily, Drew’s trouble was worth it and he found out on his honeymoon that he was successful in getting the job.
Jess & Drew’s Wedding Day
Jess and Drew had a wedding day that was authentic and true to the beautiful people that they are! Jess and Drew told me that they wanted their wedding day to showcase them as a couple. They wanted their family and friends to look back on their wedding day as being ‘so Jess and Drew.’ In order to make it all about them as a couple, Jess and Drew held their reception on a family property in the Hunter Valley with hay bales featured in the middle of the paddock.
Jess said that it was difficult to pick the best moment of the day, as the whole day was perfect. Jess did say though that one of the most special moments of the day related to butterflies! On a recent trip to Port Douglas, Jess and Drew fell in love with the many tropical butterflies that are native to the area. Jess’s mum found out about this and surprised the couple by incorporating butterflies into the wedding ceremony. On the day, the bridal party were all given triangular cases filled with butterflies. When these cases were opened, the butterflies woke up and then flew off into the heavens. The traditional wisdom is that the butterflies send up prayers and well wishes about the couple to the god/s in heaven!
Jess and Drew couldn’t stop smiling all day especially, when they saw each other for the first time as Jess walked down the aisle. They loved having their closest family and friends with them on the day to celebrate and to share in such a momentous occasion!
The weather was perfect on the day and they had an unseasonably warm and sunny day in May in the Hunter Valley! During the ceremony, a thin layer of cloud appeared which broke the harshness of the sun. Interestingly though, on the day after the wedding, the weather took a turn and became very cold with torrential rain!
Soon after the wedding, Jess and Drew flew to Queenstown in New Zealand. They were gobsmacked by the beauty of the scenery as soon as they arrived. They then travelled around New Zealand where they visited places such as Milford Sound and Christchurch!
In terms of advice that Jess and Drew would give to others organising their wedding, is to plan your day to reflect who you are as a couple. But the most important advice they have is to marry your best friend. This will mean that you will always be happy!
Thanks to Nick Sim who assisted me at this wedding!
The flower girl was really mad at me because I stole a chip from her plate 5 minutes earlier. I’ve learnt from this…
A few words from Jess & Drew –
“After choosing the wedding date and reception venue, James was the first professional that we booked! We were introduced to James’ work after speaking with the operators of Albion Farm. We then looked at James’ website and fell in love with James’ beautiful photos. We liked the fact that James’ style was very relaxed and natural.
Our high hopes for James’ photography were affirmed when we received our wedding photos. James was able to create beautiful photos of our grandparents and family members that were relaxed and natural. Even my best friend, who rarely smiles for photos, was laughing in every picture! Our dog, who is very camera shy, also liked James and would look directly at the camera when he was photographing!
When choosing James as our photographer we went with our gut and we do not have any regrets! James obviously had a lot of fun at our wedding, and it is incredible the way that he fit in with our family. In fact he was more of a friend rather than a photographer and he was accepted as part of our family.
Our favourite part of James’ photography was the fact that he was able to capture natural as opposed to staged moments. Everyone in the photos was captured as they actually are without any false pretence. It is so much better having photos like that rather than people just smiling for the sake of it.
We would highly recommend hiring James to others. He makes you feel so comfortable and special! Everyone who has seen his photos has simply said ‘wow’ so it is unnecessary to say too much at all as his work speaks for itself! – Jess & Drew”
