The Daylight Learn Workshop Recap!

DSC_8795

I taught the latest of my Daylight Learn workshop series at Montrose Berry Farm over the weekend. Already, the beautiful notes have started coming in from the participants. I seriously had the best time with these guys, so i’m stoked to hear they seemed to enjoy themselves too! Here’s a few words from some of the people who attended…

“Good morning peeps!

So on my flight back to Adelaide yesterday I thought it’d be good to reflect a little, so I wrote down a bunch of my thoughts and kind of answered the same question James asked us on Saturday at the start “Where are you at….?” I’d love to share what I wrote with you.

I feel truly inspired and satisfied that this is the direction my life NEEDS to go in. God has given me an opportunity, a skill set that continues to grow and fire inside me to become the best freaking photographer I can be; that is going to leave a lasting impact on every person I get to work for/with and interact with.

Meeting and becoming James’ friend is something I doubted would ever happen, but here I am flying back to Adelaide having made a friend that I know will be around for a very very long time. For whatever reason, doors are opening for me, and I’m meeting the most interesting people that are so willing to invest time in me. What. The. Hell.

Moving forward I feel fully equipped to begin building my business again and doing it effectively so that it can do exactly what it should be doing; bringing joy to people, giving them value and being 100% timeless, a product that can be passed down generation to generation. I want my clients to be able to sit down with their future grandkids and great grandkids and say…

‘This was our wedding day.

Thanks for reading guys. :)”

“What can I say, I am still buzzing. You are seriously a creative genius! The “Willy Wonka” of wedding photography. Your energy, your passion, your unique perspective and attention to detail has changed my outlook on everything.

My mind is overflowing with possibilities and dreams after spending the weekend at Daylight Learn, I have found myself and know where I want to go, and I cannot wait to kick off the wedding season!

I’ve made friends for life in our little workshop family – bucket loads of laughs, crazy ideas, building each other up and learning from each other in a safe positive space was such an amazing experience.
I cannot possibly thank you enough James! Daylight Learn has given me the knowledge, inspiration and support to take my concepts to the next level. You have shown me that anything is possible!” – Mel from Savvy Photography.”

“I just wanted again to tell you how much I appreciate your generosity over the weekend.
Your workshop is PHENOMENAL. Full to the brim of everything I need to get my business on the right track. You have provided the inspiration as well as the means to achieve the dream. Now all I have to do is to make my passion a priority. Not only that, you provided me with a network of talented new photographer friends who each have something to contribute. Your ability to communicate is so real. The connections you make with your clients unfold naturally making them comfortable to share their intimate moments with you. You’re a warm, fuzzy people person. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and the generosity of all who helped you make this happen. Kylie Carson.”

Day One of Daylight Learn Workshop!

Today we were lucky enough to have 15 people attending the Daylight Learn workshop which was held at Montrose Berry Farm in the Southern Highlands. Even though the day was cold, the spirits and hearts of all the participants were warm! The workshop attendees came from across the country and we even had a particularly passionate novice photographer from Hong Kong!

We spent the morning talking about the importance of branding and social media in our businesses.  The team at Hello Hello Studio spoke to us about the importance of creating a strong yet simple message that was consistent across all of our business communication. Some participants may have been surprised to learn that branding is not only about the logo that forms part of their business, but instead encompasses all communications that happen within a business.  Julia, my big sister and writer then spoke about how important it is to build a connection and relationship with clients when writing social media posts.  She also taught us how to create a social media plan that could be used throughout the year to showcase our businesses.

My brother in law, good mate and well known photographer, Michael Gray then served up an amazing lunch where we enjoyed pork belly with a quince reduction, pumpkin with pomegranate molasses, jerk spiced chicken, smoked corn salsa, bean and fig salad and a chipotle slaw…yum…. Thank you also to Cath & Jane who worked like troopers helping Michael in the kitchen.

Straight after lunch Paul the barefoot podiatrist informed us about the importance of movement and strategies that photographers can use to make sure that their body won’t give up on them throughout their career.

After this insightful presentation, I took the participants into the gardens of Montrose Berry Farm and taught them some photography techniques in order to develop their skills. We were also lucky enough to have Felicity and Jono, Hayley and Glenn, Georgina and Aonghus and Isaac and Sam model for us so that we could create some awesome images!

The cake and donuts from Ivy and Stone Cake Design were the best way to start the day.

Day 2!

We all arrived looking a little tired…. Or maybe that was just me. Does anyone else find it hard to sleep when they’re away? We decided to start a little earlier than planned so that we could fit everything in! We started the day with a visit from Jarred (and the geousgeous Jack) from Raw Digital Lab who taught us how to edit! We also enjoyed some ridiculously yummy cupcakes that he generously brought along for us all. After morning tea we got straight into talking about marketing, selling and designing wedding albums. This is probably my favourite topic to teach as I’m so passionate about everyone having their precious images in print. Vision Art also kindly sent through $100 Gift Cards for everyone! We then jumped into talking about delivery and packaging and the importance of having that wow factor when someone receives their photos. I invest a lot of money in delivering beautiful packaging and I shared what I do and why I do it 🙂

With many of the photographers being relatively new to the business we then had a great discussion and brain storming session on what’s required to bring in business.

Lunch was once again… incredible! 2 different kinds of homemade lasagne and about 10 other things… Michael even made the pasta sheets himself.

Suzanne Henderson and Simone Lee Brennan arrived to work on the hair & make up! We had 3 gorgeous couples on Sunday to photograph that were treated to a bit of styling before we photographed them. Annie Ledley from Francis Floristry was busy working away on a gorgeous floral archway in the grounds of Montrose.

I taught the team a few games that help warm up a bridal party… This shows the craziness. What we actually learnt though were the moments that were the best to shoot were the moments after moments like these… when everyone is at ease and relaxed. basically you create an awkward moment, then photograph the moments after the awkward moment.

This was actually shot in the last light of the day… with no sunset… but we learnt how to mimic the sunset with the Profoto B1 lighting kit.

If you look carefully… you can see a few of the attendees that snuck into the photo… someone had the idea that they could blow warm air… and make it look like smoke in the back ground.
